Vacuum Metallized Pigments (VMP) are fragile aluminium flakes that create a smooth and uniform surface to generate mirror-like (chrome-like) optical effects.
Vacuum Metallized Pigments (VMP) are fragile aluminium flakes that create a smooth and uniform surface to generate mirror-like (chrome-like) optical effects.
When positioned, these ultra-thin VMP flakes appear monolithic, truly replicating mirror and chrome appearances.
While Cornflake and Silverdollar provide economic metallic effects, nothing surpasses the ability to provide a tranquil mirror-like surface the way VMPs do.
HOW ARE VMPS MANUFACTURED THROUGH THE PVD PROCESS?
The PVD process is far different from wet-milling, the process of traditional flake pigments.
Vacuum Metallized Pigments (VMPs) are manufactured using a technique known as Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). This process involves several key steps:
Step 1, a polyester carrier substrate is coated with a release agent. This release agent will be a barrier between the carrier substrate and the condensing aluminium vapour.
Step 2, within a vacuum chamber, aluminium is heated to a molten state and the vapour rises towards the moving carrier substrate.
In step 3, the carrier substrate, coated with now-hardened aluminium is transferred to a solvent bath. The solvent will weaken and dissolve the release agent coating applied in Step 1.
As the release coat dissolves, the metallization breaks away in flakes much larger than the finished pigment.
In step 4, the flakes of aluminium are transferred to particle sizing. Here, flakes are broken into smaller pigments using sheer force.

The PVD process offers several advantages, including the ability to produce high-purity metal coatings and the control over film thickness and uniformity, resulting in high-quality pigments with excellent optical properties.
Vacuum Metallized Pigments are created. These pigments are ready for their introduction into the coatings, cosmetics and packaging inks we see daily.
The Vacuum Metallized Pigment is extremely thin, has excellent hiding power and liquid smooth with a mirror-like or chrome-like effect. Sunrise Vacuum Metallized Pigments are applicable for the coatings and printing industry.
