Carbon black is produced through the process of incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products, such as coal tar, FCC tar, ethylene cracking tar, and other hydrocarbon products. There are two main carbon black manufacturing processes (furnace black and thermal black) used in the production of carbon black.

The most common method for producing carbon black is the furnace process, which involves combusting the heavy petroleum products in a controlled environment with limited air supply. This process results in the formation of fine black particles of carbon that can be used in various industrial applications such as reinforcing rubber in tires, pigments in inks and paints, and as a filler in plastics.

During the furnace process, the heavy petroleum products are heated at high temperatures, typically between 2000-3000 degrees Celsius, in a reactor or furnace. The combustion process breaks down the hydrocarbon molecules into smaller carbon atoms, which then recombine to form carbon black particles. The particles are then cooled and collected either by filtration or electrostatic precipitation. Further processing steps may be required to remove impurities and achieve the desired properties of the carbon black product.

The thermal black process uses natural gas, consisting primarily of methane or heavy aromatic oils, as feedstock material. The process uses a pair of furnaces that alternate approximately every five minutes between preheating and carbon black production. The natural gas is injected into the hot refractory lined furnace, and, in the absence of air, the heat from the refractory material decomposes the natural gas into carbon black and hydrogen. The aerosol material stream is quenched with water sprays and filtered in a bag house. The exiting carbon black may be further processed to remove impurities, pelletized, screened, and then packaged for shipment. The hydrogen off-gas is burned in air to preheat the second furnace.

Overall, the production of carbon black involves a series of controlled combustion and collection steps to ensure the quality and consistency of the final product.
